From Resilience to Innovation: My Journey into AI, Fraud Prevention, and Smart Technology

Life has a way of teaching the lessons code cannot. For me, resilience wasn’t learned in a lecture hall; it was forged in moments that demanded calm, clarity, and action. That same resilience now powers the software I build: robust, practical systems that solve business problems, reduce risk, and serve real people.

In this post, I’ll pull back the curtain on the projects, practices, and mindset that turned academic theory into measurable outcomes: a 95%-accurate LSTM chatbot, faster fraud investigations for major UK banks, automation that boosted operational efficiency by 40%, and more. The principle: resilience > raw talent

You can learn a framework or a neural network in months. What you can’t fake in production is composure under pressure and the discipline to finish what you start. Resilience shows up in three practical ways:

  • Consistency under stress — shipping features and fixes even when timelines are tight.

  • Curiosity with restraint — trying new tools but choosing those that add measurable value.

  • Communication under ambiguity — translating technical trade-offs into business decisions.

These qualities colored every project I led or contributed to, from fraud investigations to AI systems and they’re why engineering outputs became business outcomes.


Project highlight: AI-powered Solar Chatbot (1,000+ queries, 95% accuracy)

Goal: Provide quick, accurate answers to users about solar systems and energy options.
Stack: Python, TensorFlow (LSTM), Flask, SQLite, REST APIs, Docker, CI.

How it came together (practical steps)

  1. Data & intents: Collected and labeled user queries into intents and entities. Focused on high-value intents (pricing, compatibility, troubleshooting).

  2. Model choice: Used an LSTM-based architecture for sequence understanding, simple, reliable, and fast for the dataset size.

  3. Retrainable pipeline: Built the NLP pipeline so new examples could be added and the model retrained automatically. This kept accuracy improving without reengineering the system.

  4. Admin dashboard: Built a live dashboard with authentication to review misclassifications and manage replies essential for human-in-the-loop improvements.

  5. Deployment: Containerized the app with Docker and integrated CI to run tests and push releases safely.

Why it worked

  • Intent-focused labeling reduced noise.

  • Admin tooling turned support agents into data curators.

  • CI + Docker made deployment predictable and reversible.


Practical AI: RAG pipelines & ticket automation (NLP → structured tickets)

At Fluff Software, I implemented a Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) style pipeline to convert free-form issue descriptions into structured ticket fields. The idea: combine retrieval of relevant templates/rules with lightweight generative logic to produce consistent ticket titles, priorities, and machine assignments.

Takeaway: When you need structure from messy text, combine rule-based logic with targeted retrieval + small neural components. You get reliability and explainability, two things businesses need more than bleeding-edge novelty.


Fraud operations: patterns, speed, and clarity (50+ alerts/shift)

Working fraud cases for five UK banks taught me a crucial lesson: speed and clarity beat complexity. You can build an ensemble of models, but if investigators can’t quickly interpret alerts and act, the model’s value collapses.

What I focused on:

  • Signal prioritization: Rank alerts so the highest-risk items surface first.

  • Clear handovers: Write concise summaries and standardized forms for handoffs to compliance.

  • Training: Cut onboarding time by 20% through targeted documentation and shadowing sessions.

Result: fewer false escalations, faster resolution times, and more confident investigators.


Engineering practices that scale

If a feature can’t be tested, automated, and rolled back, it won’t last in production. These practices are non-negotiable in my workflow:

  • TDD & small, frequent PRs — keeps regressions small and reviews focused.

  • CI/CD pipelines — automated tests, linters, and deployment gating.

  • Containerization — Docker makes environments reproducible; combined with CI, it makes releases safe.

  • Monitoring & observability — logs, metrics, and dashboards that tell you not just that something failed, but why.


Human side: documentation, mentoring, outreach

Tech without people is just a puzzle. I mentor junior analysts, produce clear internal docs, and deliver outreach that increased underrepresented student engagement by 18% YoY. Good documentation shortens onboarding and keeps institutional knowledge alive and that’s often where the biggest ROI lives.


What I believe makes an effective tech hire (or partner)

  • Delivers outcomes, not features. Focus on what moves the business metric.

  • Communicates trade-offs clearly. A good engineer proposes options with pros and cons.

  • Builds for maintainability. You’ll thank them in 6 months.

  • Is curious, but pragmatic. New tools are great if they solve a concrete problem.


Quick checklist: launching an AI feature that survives production

  1. Define the business metric that the feature must improve.

  2. Start small a focused intent or risk signal.

  3. Build instrumentation and tests before launch.

  4. Ship with a human-in-the-loop to catch edge cases.

  5. Automate retraining and monitoring.

  6. Document the “why” and the “how” for handovers.


Final note: code is a tool, people are the multiplier

I’ve built systems that scale, detect anomalies, and automate mundane tasks. The common denominator across successful projects isn’t the library or the model, it’s the people who use and maintain the product.
